a fiji travel guide to relaxation + adventure

Fiji is absolutely amazing. There’s endless sunrise + sunset views, palm trees, colorful reefs, and kind people. The perfect place for honeymooners, couples, and even families (lots of family resorts!) to RELAX! As you may know by now, I’m not the best relaxer but work has been insane for me, we've hosted tons of visitors in the past few months, and our schedules had been hectic, so Fiji was the perfect vacation for me to just unwind and practice the art of doing nothing.  Fiji is located in the Pacific Ocean, a 3.5 hour flight west from Sydney to Nadi which makes it the perfect getaway from either the West Coast of the US or from the East Coast of Australia. This guide will walk you through how we saw Fiji in 7 days and how to explore from Nadi or the islands!

We flew into Nadi (pronounced “Nandi”), which is on the main island of Fiji. For most international flights, it’s the main hub to fly into. We didn’t actually spend much time in Nadi/Denarau at all because our one full day there we decided to do a half day Surf Tour which completely wiped us out. We boated out to some reef breaks about 3 miles off Nadi and got to surf at Cloudbreak, one of the most famous surf breaks in the world. The swells typically have waves in the 8-20 feet range and pros from all over the world fly in for big swells. Luckily on the day we went out, there wasn’t much surf so we got to play in the pros playground on some small waves.

If you do opt to stay on the main island near Nadi, most people stay on Denarau Island where majority of the resorts are (not really a true island, more like a peninsula). It’s also beautiful and the resorts are nice, but to me the real beauty was really on the small islands. Fiji is made up of over 300 islands to choose from!

After our surf tour, we headed to Tokoriki, which is part of the Mamanuca Islands. The Mamanuca Islands and the Yasawa Islands (farther from Nadi) are the most popular island groups to stay at. South Sea Cruises is the main ferry that shuttles people between Nadi and both the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands. (It’s not cheap, but also pretty much a monopoly, so you don’t have many options!) Other alternatives include sea plane, helicopter, or private charter ($$$).

Our ferry to Tokoriki Island took about 1 hour, and was much nicer than the types of ferries you find in Thailand and other islands in South East Asia. Our hotel was called The Sheraton Resort & Spa Tokoriki Island and we absolutely loved it. The neighboring hotel, Tokoriki Island Resort, which is an adult only resort & super nice & quiet, is the only other resort on the island. Tokoriki Island Resort had an amazing chef & restaurant too, and guests from either hotel could make reservations there.
